It is said that a mother can understand her baby’s need or feeling even if the baby remains silent. Well, it is true that a mother can easily understand whether her child is happy or sad or nervous. But there might be more complicated things. Suppose a baby is suffering from stomach ache. A mother can understand that her baby is not comfortable and he or she is suffering from some kind of problem. But is it possible for the mother to understand what the problem exactly is until and unless her baby puts it in words? The answer is no and this common problem faced by mothers when their babies are too young to speak. This is where the importance of sign language comes in. Babies less than 2 years old can hardly speak. But they can very well use sign language. Remember waving bye bye or just blowing kiss is nothing but sign language. If your baby understands these things, he or she will understand other things communicated by sign language as well. It is never too early to teach your baby sign language. Babies understand sign language many months before they can use the language themselves. So if your baby is not using his or her hands to say something, it doesn’t mean that your baby is unable to understand what you are saying through sign language. You should remember that while teaching a baby sign language you will have to have patience. Babies take several months to learn the language. You should not stop your effort in the mid way. No matter how long your baby is taking to learn the language you should encourage him or her to communicate with you through sign language. Many babies find it difficult to learn the baby sign language because the parents teach them in a wrong way. You should use concept works like hungry, happy, pain etc in the initial stage. Start with simple words like milk, apple, diaper, water and so on. Choose sign language for objects that can be sown to your baby so that your baby can relate the object, the word and the sign. This makes it easier for babies to learn the language.
